Our neighbourhood, “Riccione Abissinia”

The Hotel Baden Baden is situated in one of Riccione’s most beautiful neighbourhoods, the famous Abissinia district.

Located in the southern part of Riccione (between Viale Ceccarini and the thermal baths), it is a place with a unique historical charm, closely linked to the era when the town became the ‘Green Pearl’ of the Adriatic.

Established in the early 20th century between Viale Gramsci and the sea, it is known as an exclusive holiday resort, characterised by small villas, pittosporum trees and the historic area of the Grand Hotel.
The name derives from a 19th-century dispute between landowners, referencing the episode of ‘At salut Bisinia’, and has since evolved toponymically over time.

  • Origins and History: The neighbourhood developed through private initiative between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with the construction of villas by noble families from Bologna and Milan, and immediately established itself as an exclusive area.
  • Place names: Originally, the area was divided among various estates, notably that of Count Giacinto Martinelli. The area came to be known as ‘Abissinia’ in the early 20th century, before being renamed Viale Roma and, subsequently, in 1930, Viale Principi di Piemonte; however, the historical name remained in common usage.
  • Iconic Places: Abissinia is closely associated with the Grand Hotel, which opened at the turn of the century, and the Angelini ice-cream parlour, which has been in business for over a century; in the 1960s, it was a hub for the families of the Luna Park fairground workers.
  • Character: Described as Riccione’s most ‘laid-back and laid-back’ neighbourhood, Abissinia has retained a residential, green atmosphere, distinct from the more chaotic hustle and bustle, whilst remaining central.

Today, Abissinia remains one of the most elegant and distinctive areas of Riccione, characterised by tree-lined avenues and a strong sense of history.
